Albert Montanes has been playing well this week at Roland Garros, and has made it through to round four having only dropped one set. Montanes looked particularly impressive in round three, where he dismissed twelfth seed Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets (6-1, 7-6, 6-1). The Spaniard is known to be a capable clay court player, and it will be interesting to see just how far he can go.
His fourth round opponent will be Fabio Fognini of Italy. The world No. 49 cruised through his first two matches here, but was pushed into four sets by Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Fognini has really impressed this week, and a win on Sunday could boost his ranking quite significantly. Having made a slow start to the season, the Italian will surely be delighted with his progress here so far.
Prior to this match, Montanes has a 3-1 head to head record against Fognini. All of the meetings between the pairing have taken place on clay. Montanes has the momentum ahead of this clash, having beaten Fognini twice already this season. Fognini was fairly competitive in both contests though, so perhaps the Spaniard won’t have everything his own way on Sunday.
